MYCROSCHOOL GAINESVILLE CELEBRATES ITS FIRST GRADUATING CLASS ON JUNE 1; New Local Charter High School Fights the Dropout Crisis by Providing Students a Second Chance to Get Ready for College and Careers
WHAT: MYcroSchool Gainesville will hold its first high school graduation ceremony on June 1. Approximately 30 students will walk across the stage to receive their diploma. Many of these students were behind in credits when they enrolled in MYcroSchool; nearly all were out-of-school or at-risk of dropping out. Some will be the first in their family to graduate from high school.
The dropout crisis affects our state. One in four students will drop out of high school, and a student drops out of school every 26 seconds. About 83,500 students Florida students did not graduate on-time in 2011. The lost lifetime earnings for that class of dropouts alone total $9.5 billion. Dropouts are more likely to be unemployed, living in poverty, incarcerated, unhealthy, and single parents.
Principal Randy Starling praised the progress of graduates, staff, and the school: “MYcroSchool has definitely made an impact in the lives of many students, graduates and non graduates. I feel that teachers, staff, and myself have learned as much as the students have this year.”
The school is designed to add value and meet the needs of Gainesville. As a school that serves the most at-risk students, Principal Starling commented: “We have definitely been noticed by the Gainesville community. We started off the year with some community apprehension but the school and students have for the most part won the community over.”
